Library Activity Report 2018 – 2019

  • Library Orientation

At the beginning of the academic year 2018-2019, two-phase library orientation was carried out for all the students. Primarily, lecture method with power point presentation was used for the orientation in the classrooms. Secondly in order to make all the students familiar with the different departments of the library and to give them hands-on practice on the OPAC, a library tour was organized. Further orientation sessions for the use of National Digital Library (NDL) and N-list program were also conducted for the second and third-year students. After the orientation students became member of NDL and N-list project.

  • Sessions Conducted by the Library

In order to boost students reading skill the session on ‘Speed Reading’ was organized on 20th December 2018. Dr. Sushama Powdwal, Former University Librarian of SNDT University, was the resource person for session.

Taking into consideration the growing importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and plagiarism issues, session on ‘IPR in Academic Settings’ was conducted by Mr. Savio D’souza. Students and staff of the college were participated in the session. The session was very interactive and informative.

  • Noteworthy services of the Library

Throughout the year book displays on various themes were organized in order to inculcate interest about different books among the students. Book displays on the celebrations of different days like, women’s day, environment day, reading inspirational day were organized as well.

During the year Institutional repository updated with the faculty publications of the year 2018-2019. Along with this in the year library came out with the bibliographic compilation of teachers publications of last five years.

Further, college journal publication webpages updated with current information. Link to E-pgpathshala and SWAYAM program was provided on the library webpage in order to provide easy access to these resources.

Updating of Digital library was done by adding more resources to it. Content and summary of books added to database in order to provide easy and precise search in the webopac. Article indexing supported by adding abstract of the article in the database for relevant and prompt retrieval of articles. Moodle server was updated with the latest question papers of all the courses and syllabus. Table of content of the latest journals publications was scanned and emailed to the concern staff members. Subject of the journal articles was the basic criteria for the selection of journals and staff.

The noteworthy endeavor of the library was that implementation of RFID technology started in the year. Approximately 12000 books completed with RFID tags.

Service of Language Laboratory was continued during the year. Book Bank Service was provided to all the three years B.Com. students. Total 25 students of first, second and third year B.Com. were benefited by this service. Students were permitted to retain book bank books with them throughout the entire semester.

During the year membership with the American Library and N-List Database was continued. Students visited the American library frequently for their research work. Total 149 Students became the member of N-list database for their research work. Library Best User Award was given to two students of the college for their better performance in the library.

  • New Books added to the collection & their value:

During the year total 1186 books have been added to the library collection, thus the total collection of the library is reached to 45187. Total 26 subject journals, 23 magazines and eight English newspapers were subscribed by the library during the year.

Library Orientation

Library orientation program was carried out by the library at the beginning of the academic year for all the first year students. Further students were oriented in small groups to the use of the library collection and library catalogue. In addition library tour was conducted to make them aware of different sections of the library.

 

Orientation to National Digital Library (NDL) and Awareness about N-List program

All third year students of all the streams were oriented for using National Digital Library. They were introduced the home page, registration and learning resources offered by NDL

Awareness of N-list program were created among the students during the NDL orientation. User ID and passwords for good number of students to use N-list program were created by the library.

Organization of Author talk

Eminent authors from varied disciplines were invited to have talk on the books or topics which they have authored. Namely Dr. Nina Sabnani from IIT Mumbai and Mr. Savio Lobo, an architecture from Bandra, were invited. Dr. Sabnani discussed stories of partition through animated films and Mr. Lobo, introduced and talk about his book ‘Bandra by Hand’. The responses of students were brilliant for both the sessions. Session For teachers

With the department of career advancement, session on ‘Scholarly writings & research publications’ By Dr. Sushama Powdwal, was organized on 6 June 2017 for teaching staff. Madam Powdwal discussed about the writing of research papers and getting it published in research journal. She also talked about selection process of good journal for the article publication. She discussed the danger of predatory journals as well.

Events Celebrations

Throughout the year different days were observed by the library. Such as, Reading inspiration Day (Birth Anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. Kalam), National Education Day, Marathi Bhasha Divas and International Women’s Day Etc. Relevant books were displayed during the celebrations of these days, in order to inculcate values and importance of these themes among the students.

Other Activities

  • In the academic year 2017- 2018, subscription of N-list- the project of INFLIBNET is continued by the college library.
  • Memberships of American Library are sustained.
  • Theme based book display was organized during the year in order to motivate students for reading.
  • Institutional repository updated with the faculty publications.
  • Designing of web page of the college journals was initiated: Andrean Research Journal, Ruminations: The Andrean Journal of Literature and Ethics and Society: An International Journal of religions and cultures for peace and Harmony of Cardinal Paul Poupard Foundation Chair of Inter-religious & Inter-cultural Dialogue
  • Library Best User Award was given to five students of the college for their better performance in the library.

Library Collection

During the year 1389 books were added to the library collection, thus the total collection of the library is reached to 42412. Beside this college library subscribe to 28 journals and 26 magazines of different subjects.

Book Bank Scheme

Book bank service provided to the economically backward and deserving students of first, second and third-year of B.com. during the academic year. The books were issued under the book bank scheme, students can retain with them throughout the entire semester.

Book Exhibition

Books of varied publications on numerous subjects were exhibited during the book exhibition on 8th and 9th December 2016. The response from the staff and students for the exhibition was remarkable. Report

  • Career corner was created in the library, to create awareness amongst the students about new professional and educational arenas.
  • Library Best User Award was given to five students of the college for their better performance in the library.

Library Collection

During the year 1194 titles were added to the library collection, thus the total collection of the library is reached to 41023. Beside this college library subscribe to 27 journals and 29 magazines of different subjects.

Book Bank Scheme

Book bank service provided to the first, second and third-year B.com. students for the academic year. The books were issued under the book bank scheme, students can retain with them throughout the entire semester.

Library Activities for the Academic year 2015 – 2016

Library Orientation

Comprehensive user orientation program conducted with the library tour for the classes of PG as well as undergraduate. Students were oriented in small groups to the use of library collection, library catalogue and library tour was conducted to make them aware of different sections of the library.

Library Automation

On the automation part SLIM 21 library management software purchased by the college with the additional module of Digital library. With this new software following library services started:

  • Acquisition of library materials
  • Automated circulation and serial control.
  • Bar coding of all the existing collection completed.
  • Webopac (Online library Catalogue) providing access to bibliographic details of library collection by 24/7 through college website.
  • Article Indexing
  • Report Generation
  • Digital library of copyright free e-books.

Institutional Repository

In order to create institutional repository Dspace institutional repository software installed in the library. The repository consisted the collection of student publication, faculty publication and college publication. Repository is open for all the students and staff members of St. Andrew’s College of Arts, Commerce and Science.

Other Activities

  • Subscription to N-list project of INFLIBNET has been sustained for the academic year.
  • New Card reader device introduced at the entrance of the library, to mark students check in and check out timings.
  • The noteworthy endeavor of the college library for the academic year 2015-16, was setting up of IT Zone, with 18 computers with the internet facility.
  • Membership of British Council Library and American library was renewed for the academic year.
  • Theme based Book display was organized during the sociology week.
  • Library Best User Award was given to five students of the college for their better performance in the library.

Library Collection

During the year 584 titles have been added to the library collection, thus the total collection of library is reached to 39, 577. Apart from this subscription to 13 journals and 31 magazines of different subject areas was sustained.

Book Bank Scheme

Book bank service provided to economically backward and deserving students of first, second and third year of B.com. for the academic year. The books issued under the book bank scheme, students can retain with them throughout the entire semester.
